27 things you never knew about Prof Dora Akunyili

1. Her full name is Dora Nkem Akunyili. If you are an Igbo man, you will know why Dora was Nkem to Nigerians. Nkem means my own.
2. She was born in Makurdi, Benue state on 14th July 1954.
3. She was born on Wednesday. Cancer is the zodiac sign of a person born on this day.
4. Horse is the mythical animal and Wood is the element for a person born on this day if we consider the very old art of Chinese astrology. Now you know why she was a radical achiever. One with the strength of a horse yet as absorbing as a wood.
5. She hailed from Nanka in Anambra State of Nigeria. A remote village with such a renown personality. Something good can actually come out of Nazareth.
6. She passed the First School Leaving Certificate with Distinction at St. Patrick’s Primary School, Isuofia, Anambra State in 1966. This was a school for the poor.

7. She passed the West African School Certificate (W.A.S.C.) with Grade I Distinction in 1973 from Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka, both in Nigeria.
8. She was a pharmacist and governmental administrator. You don't need to be told.
9. Right from her youth, she hated to wear high-heeled shoes due to her a-little-above moderate body mass.
10. She was such a beautiful girl as a teenager.
11. She was a Senior Lecturer and Consultant Pharmacologist in the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (U.N.N.), Enugu Campus, before she became the NAFDAC boss. NAFDAC boss with a difference. Check the records!
12. She got her First Degree in Pharmacy B.Pharm (Hons) in 1978.
13. She obtained her PhD degree in 1985 from U.N.N.
14. She was a Post Doctorate Fellow of University of London and a Fellow of the West African Post Graduate College of Pharmacists. Our dear achiever had never relented to pursue success to the cave.
15. She was trained on Senior Management skills Course in RIPA, London and Computer Education programme by WHO/UNDP/World Bank Sponsored, Enugu in 1998 and 1994 respectively. Gbam!
16. Wait a minute! She liked vegetable soup very well.
17. Her favorite wear was African aso ebi with Italian sandals.
18. She speaks far better english than 'HER'. Daris god o, Na only you waka com, chai chai... She doesn't say these because she was a dependable qualified professor.
19. She started her working career as a Hospital Pharmacist from 1978–1981, in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (U.N.T.H) Enugu.
20. She ventured into academics as a Graduate Assistant (Research Fellow) in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, U.N.N. from 1982-1986.
21. She was a devout Catholic and happily married to Dr. J.C. Akunyili, of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, Nigeria and they had 6 children together.
 22. She became the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria and former (December 17, 2008 - December 15, 2010) Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications. When panadol was just chalk granules, she came with a far better option to sustain life.
23. She had gained international recognition and won hundreds of awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights. Kudos ma! 24. She ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central on the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) platform in April 2011 but was defeated by Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN. Even when you lost, you won in our hearts.
25. She died in an India hospital on the 7th of June, 2014 after a battle with Cancer. Chai chai...*crying*
